Changing mole? CEPS offers expert skin checks to detect and treat concerns early — because early action saves lives.

Let’s face it — we’ve all got moles. Most of the time, they’re completely harmless. But what if one changes? Gets darker, grows quickly, or starts to itch or bleed? That’s when it’s worth paying attention.

At CEPS, we often see patients who weren’t sure if a mole was “normal” or needed checking. If you’ve ever wondered the same, you’re not alone — and it’s a good question to ask.

So, what’s the big deal with moles?

While many are benign, some can be an early sign of skin cancer — especially melanoma. The key is knowing what to look for. If a mole changes in size, shape, or colour, has uneven borders, or behaves differently (like becoming itchy or crusty), it’s worth having it looked at.

What else should I watch for?

We often talk about the “ABCDE” rule:

  • Asymmetry: one half of the mole doesn’t match the other
  • Border: edges are irregular or blurred
  • Colour: varying shades or unusual colours
  • Diameter: anything larger than 6mm should be assessed
  • Evolution: any recent change in the mole’s appearance

If you notice any of these, it’s a good idea to book in. Catching things early really matters.

How do we check them at CEPS?

When you come in for a skin check, we use a specialised tool called a dermatoscope. It lets us see structures beneath the skin surface that aren’t visible to the naked eye. We assess the mole’s symmetry, colour, borders, and any signs of irregularity. If there’s anything concerning, we might suggest a biopsy or surgical removal right away — often during the same visit.

What if it’s nothing?

Then you get peace of mind, and that’s worth a lot. Skin cancers can grow fast, but they’re also very treatable when caught early. Having a mole assessed doesn’t mean it’s cancer — but it’s the best way to rule it out.

What’s involved in removal?

If a mole needs to come off, we usually do it as a small surgical procedure right here in clinic. It’s quick, done under local anaesthetic, and designed with minimal scarring in mind. We also send the sample for testing to confirm exactly what it is.

We’re here for the what-ifs.

Our team at CEPS works closely with GPs and dermatologists throughout Auckland. Whether you were referred or found something yourself, we’re equipped to diagnose and treat concerning moles with both medical care and aesthetic awareness in mind.

We understand that anything involving “the C-word” can be confronting. But skin checks are all about prevention, not panic. Our role is to give you confidence and clarity — and if treatment is needed, to provide it with expertise and care.

The takeaway? Don’t wait.

If something’s changed — a new mole, or an old one that looks different — book a check. It’s a small step that could make a big difference.
