Dermoscopy and skin screening

Skinzure is a one-stop-service for skin screening. It’s cost effective because it saves you the expense of a screening visit, plus a GP visit if there’s a problem and a referral to a specialist for which you then pay another consultation fee.

With our practice it’s one referral for a specialist assessment and opinion, so you not only save money but more importantly time. From skin check to a diagnosis and treatment is a matter of days not months, which also removes the stress of juggling multiple appointments and referrals in the process.

Dermoscopy is the examination of skin lesions with a hand-held digital device called a dermatoscope. It is similar to a magnifying glass (making things up to 10 times bigger) and when used by expertly trained technicians is far more accurate than examining your skin with the naked eye.

Gel is applied to the areas being examined and the dermatoscope held close to the skin for a detailed inspection. This does not hurt or harm you.

Photographs are taken of any abnormal looking lesions, and these will be personally assessed by Adam Greenbaum. If they are deemed harmless you will be reassured and monitored with a future appointment. Any lesions suspicious for cancer will be removed and sent for further testing.

You will have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results and treatment options.

With your permission, your information is stored in the practice database which allows comparison of any changes in existing lesions and assists in the identification of any new ones.

Do I need a skin check? and if I do, how often should I have one?

Most white-skinned people in New Zealand – especially those who have grown up and lived till middle-age here – should consider the benefits of having a comprehensive skin check each year.

If you had 5 episodes of sun burn that simply left you peeling before you turned 16, your relative risk for melanoma over a lifetime is double that of someone who didn’t suffer those sun burns.

If you have more than 100 moles your life-time risk of developing melanoma is raised significantly.

If you have 1 first degree relative (brother, sister, mother or father) who has had melanoma or any relative who had a melanoma before they turned 30, your risk is significant, and you should be screened regularly.

If you’ve already had 1 melanoma, then your risk of second melanoma goes up 9-fold and you should be screened 3-monthly for the first 2 years and after that, it depends on how thick your melanoma was, but at least annually life-long.

People who live alone, especially those over 50 (who are already more at risk because risk rises with age) should be screened because self-monitoring your own back is impracticable.

Having your skin checked

Whether you’ve noticed a recent skin change and want reassurance about that specifically, or whether you’d like the peace of mind that comes from having an expert assess all of your skin – from scalp to soles of feet including your back and those bits you can’t see properly even by twisting and turning with a strategically placed mirror, our service is here for you and priced so that you can chose.
