Partnering with patients is the foundation of everything we do at Cutting Edge Plastic Surgery. I treat you the way I would wish my family or myself to be treated by a surgeon. I empower patients to make the right decisions by arming them with all the information they need to feel confident in achieving a realistic outcome.

What do patients need to know?
The information needed by a patient to make good decisions about surgery varies. For example, surgery for a cancer that will need a reconstruction versus surgery to change the appearance of a body part that is “normal” require different considerations. Surgical intervention for cancers may be limited by the technique required, so giving patients less leeway about what we need to discuss; whereas surgery to change your appearance requires more discussion around the pros and cons and the realistic goals and likely outcomes.
The importance of realistic expectations
Cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly commonplace as the result of media coverage, film and TV drama, celebrity, and reality TV and in recent years, social media and “influencers”. When considering it, you may perceive it to be expensive, but what I believe is more important, is that you understand it to be dangerous (and potentially very much more expensive to put right) when performed badly or inappropriately.
Making the right decision
Any surgical procedure results in a scar. A bad result may affect that aspect of your appearance permanently. It is vital therefore that you:
- choose an appropriately qualified and experienced surgeon
- receive expert and impartial advice and;
- appropriate treatment and follow-up.
You need someone who will see you through good results and bad ones.
What does a consultation involve?
The initial consultation is the first step for any patient who is thinking about surgery. It is a detailed conversation to help you make the right decisions for your care.
I will take a full medical history and perform a complete examination – addressing all of you, so as not to miss medical conditions, which may be significant if missed.
I will spend the necessary time to understand your aims and concerns. I will explain all procedures carefully using diagrams and literature that you can take away with you to re-read later.
I will dictate any letter to your GP in front of you and send you a copy so that everything is completely transparent and available for review. I do this because there will be a lot to take in. Specifically, I will ensure that you understand fully what is involved with any treatment I recommend, and any potential risks.
A consultation for skin cancer may be less complicated, in which case you will have a “see and treat” appointment which minimises the time and cost. However, there are sometimes complex decisions to make about how the wound is closed – simply with stitching, or with a skin graft or a skin flap – so in these cases I allow time to ensure you understand and participate in these decisions.
How do I make the right decision?
At the end of the consultation, my aim is for you to leave with realistic advice about treatment and a clear understanding of the results that can be achieved – good or bad. If this cannot be completed within the appointment time, then I will arrange for you to see me again to ensure you are comfortable. Any subsequent appointments are simply for your benefit and are covered by your initial consultation fee.
My role in this process is to help you to make fully informed sensible decisions about undergoing treatment. In preparation there is a lot of information on this website you can read before making an appointment to see me.
How will I be cared for after surgery?
Your surgery will be performed by me. Occasionally I will arrange to have qualified assistance in the operating room – especially during larger procedures. These assistants will be qualified doctors, nurses or theatre technicians who are there at my expense to help minimise your time under anaesthetic. Sometimes I might team up with another specialist plastic surgeon when it’s more efficient having two experts working together e.g., in major procedures such as microsurgery or body contouring after massive weight loss.
On the other hand, there may be times when trainee and qualified doctors have asked to watch me operate. In these circumstances, I will ask your permission for them to observe (but not assist in) your surgery and make it clear that you are free, indeed encouraged, to decline their presence unless you are totally comfortable.
All my surgery is performed in modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Each is registered and compliant with all relevant legislation. When General Anaesthesia is required, it is administered by a Consultant Anaesthetist, hand-picked by me – not just for technical expertise, but for sympathetic patient care too.
Specialist nursing and physiotherapy staff will care for you post-operatively and optimise your recovery time. You will have post-operative support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week allowing you the peace of mind and the confidence you need to make a rapid recovery so that the “enhanced you” is back leading your life to the full as soon as possible.
Understanding the choices between surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments
With all the misinformation around about cosmetic surgery it’s easy to get confused about your choices.
Many patients do not require surgery but can achieve the cosmetic restoration and enhancement they desire by careful administration of non-surgical treatments. I administer the full range of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, facial peels or dermal and soft tissue fillers. I am also qualified to administer laser and intense pulsed light treatments where appropriate.
For those patients who are suitable for cosmetic surgery, I plan and perform this with care and expertise to improve your appearance and restore the natural beauty of your youth. I believe surgery should achieve natural, attractive results that avoid an “operated look”, whilst giving you a restored, or enhanced physical beauty.
